In 1868 in the popular town of Hot Springs, NC, the owner of the hotel at the famous Hot Springs, Colonel James H. Rumbough, built the house that he named Rutland for he and his wife, Carrie, to raise their 8 children. Many people from all over the country and beyond were entertained over the years in this grande dame of Hot Springs.
In 1999 after 2 ½ years of renovation it was opened as the Mountain Magnolia Inn as a country Inn and restaurant. As many of the original features of this gracious historic home were preserved as possible and ones that had to be replaced or restored were done to exact replicas of the original. The original newel post for the staircase was brought back to the house from another local home, the hand planed heart pine and walnut floors were uncovered and refinished, original mantels brought back from the attic and the glorious ceilings with Italianate plaster medallions were repaired.
We are proud to be stewards of this very special place and would like to share her story.
We invite you to stop by and enjoy touring, hearing stories, and having refreshments of birthday cake, coffee, and mimosas.
